Missouri business are getting to keep some of the money you pay in sales taxes...and the state auditor wants to do something about it.
State Auditor Margaret Kelly has released her audit of the Revenue Department.
The audit found businesses usually pay 13 million dollars too much in sales tax every year.
Right now that money is refunded to the businesses that overpaid instead of the consumer.
Businesses have argued that the refund compensates them for the cost of collecting the tax.
But Kelly does not think the businesses should keep the money:
Kelly also says she hopes Missouri lawmakers will consider legislation backing her idea.
Giving money back to the consumer is not a new idea...but so far nobody has come up with a plan that does that.
