The Senate perfects a measure to allow parole officers to carry badges and guns

State Capital Bureau The senate is one step closer to sending the house a bill that would allow probation and parole officers to carry a badge and also to carry a weapon.

Liz Zack has the story from Jefferson City.

On their first day back in session the senate initially approved a measure increasing the support and protection of state probation and parole officers.

Senator Caskey says that because many of the parolees live in unsafe neighborhoods, the officers must carry guns for protection.

Rather than reimburse the officers, the correction department wants to issue the new weapons themselves.

The bill will have one more vote in the senate before it is passed out into the house.
