JEFFERSON CITY - Speaker of the House, Catherine Hanaway,R- St. Louis County, will announce on Tuesday her candidacy in the race for Secretary of State in the 2004 election, according to Paul Sloca, communications director for Missouri's Republican party.
The announcement will take place at 2:15 p.m. at the Missouri Republican Party Headquarters.
The current Secretary of State Matt Blunt, also a Republican, is running for governor in the 2004 election.
Hanway was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 1998 and had previously served as the chief of staff in the U.S. Senator Kit Bond's St. Louis district office. This year she was elected the first female speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives.
In his January speech nominating Hanaway for Speaker of the House, Rep. Bryan Pratt, R-Blue Springs, said that Hanaway wasn't selected "on a basis of gender, but because [she was] by far the best person for that position."
Robin Carnahan, an attorney and daughter of former Gov. Mel Carnahan and former U.S. Sen. Jean Carnahan, has previously announced her candidacy.
She will be running on the Democratic ticket and has been endorsed by former Secretary of State Bekki Cook and former U.S. Senator Thomas Eagleton.
Carnahan has already begun campaigning with fund raisers in St. James and Jasper County and in a marathon as part of her Keep Robin Running campaign. Supporters were able to pledge to her campaign for every mile she runs. A marathon is 26.2 miles. Carnahan ran in a marathon Nov. 2 - exactly one year before next year's election.
