Twenty-one year olds may be able to run for state office.

Another milestone may come with turning twenty-one. Meghan Kloth has more from Jefferson City.

A proposed constitutional ammendment would lower the age to run for the state House of Representatives from twenty-four to twenty-one. It would also lower the age to run for state senate from thirty to twenty-five. St. Louis senator Maida Coleman says those who fight for our country should be able to run for office.

"Personally I've always felt about the issue that if we can send eighteen year-olds to war to fight to defend this country, then certainly those people deserve the right to represent us in the halls of the capitol."

Students from the University of Missouri system said they support the resolution. Coleman said that Missouri is one of only seven states where the minimum age requirement is not twenty-one. From the capitol, I'm Meghan Kloth

A senior in college may soon be able to run for state office. Meghan Kloth has more from Jefferson City.

St. Louis Senator Maida Coleman has proposed a constitutional ammendment to lower the age requirements to run for the state legislature. Coleman says due to term-limits, Missouri is running out of suitable people to run for office.

"We need to open it up for those who are younger to come into the body."

Coleman is proposing lowering the age to run for the House of Representatives from twenty-four to twenty-one. She wants to lower the senate from thirty to twenty-five. Missouri is one of the few states left with age requirements over twenty-one. From the capitol, I'm Meghan Kloth.

Missouri is currently one of the few states where twenty-one year olds are not allowed to run for state office. But a St. Louis senator wants to ammend that law.

Maida Coleman wants to lower the age requirements to run for state office. She proposes lowering the age requirement for the House of Representatives from twenty-four to twenty-one and the Senate from thirty to twenty-five. Coleman says those who defend our country should be able to serve in public office.

"If we allow and ask young people to carry guns to defend the country, they deserve the right to also run for office."

Republican Senator Gary Nodler says that characteristics for being a soldier are not the same as being a legislator. Students from the University of Missouri system says they support the proposed resolution. From the capitol, I'm Meghan Kloth
