The Senate Education Committee voted to allow a student representative of the board of curators to have a vote on any matter coming before the board.

University of Missouri-Kansas City senior Charles Stadtlander of the Associated Students of the University of Missouri says students pay tuition, which means students deserve a vote.

OutCue: ...part of that.
Contents: Like in any business situation, or in any board situation if you pay over 50 percent of the costs to be a part of that then you should have a vote and a voice to be a part of that.

Opponents to the measure say allowing students to vote on sensitive personnel issues could create a conflict of interest, or expose student members to undue pressure from professors or faculty.

From the state Capitol, I'm Tim Carnahan.

The Senate Education committee voted to allow a student member of a university board of curators to have a vote in any matter heard before the board.

Currently, student representatives do not have a vote.

Opponents to the bill say allowing students to vote on personnel issues could expose students to pressure or retribution from disciplined professors or faculty.

University student and representative of the Associate Students of the University of Missouri Charles Stadtlander says the vote has deeper significance.

Actuality:STADT2
RunTime: 7secs
OutCue: ...will be represented.
Contents: The symbolism of that right to vote is very powerful and sends a strong message to the students that we will be represented.

The voting power could be temporary.

In 2009 a legislative review would determine if it should continue.

The Senate Education committee has voted to allow a student representative on a governing board of a Missouri college to vote on any matter coming before the board.

Jackson County Democrat Yvonne Wilson served on the University of Missouri-Kansas City board of curators for eight years.

She says allowing students to vote on sensitive personnel issues could have unintended consequences for that student.

Contents: I would be very uneasy making a decision about a professor and my graduation or my credits depend on that professor. And some people can be and are vindictive.
