Temporary assistance for Katrina evacuees

As more and more residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina make their way into Missouri, the state's social services department is trying to ensure those people's governmental aid is not interrupted.

The state is working closely with social services in the Gulf Region to verify and continue food stamp and medicaid programs for the evacuees.

Missouri is also offering a temporary assistance program for people who plan to start a new life in the Show Me State.

State law makes people eligible for a joint program between the state and federal government offering financial aid to families with dependent children.

The people however must be committed to become Missouri residents.

Missouri Interim Director of Family services Janel Luck says identifying those people is the hardest part.

Contents: "We really have to work with some of the evacuees, are you here for a couple of days? and then you're going back. Are you moving on to another state, or are you here and you don't have any plans to go anywhere else?"

A family of three is eligible for $292 a month. The program does have a 60 month lifetime limit for families. From the state capital, I'm Jonathan Levin.
