Senate committee hears bill to stop travel clubs from ripping off consumers

A Senate committee heard testimony on a bill aiming to crack down on fraudulent travel clubs.

State Senator Larry Taylor says he wants to stop travel clubs from ripping off consumers.

A Senate committee heard testimony on Taylor's bill.

Ross Summers is the president of the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce.

"The complaints that we get are from people that indicate they've had this bad experience in Branson. It reflects poorly on our town and they feel like they've been taken advantage of.

The bill requires travel clubs to register with the Attorney General's office.

A similar bill did not pass last year.

One state senator says travel clubs are ripping off Missourians.

Travis Thompson has more from the state Capitol.

People drove across the state to testify for a bill aiming to crack down on misbehaving travel clubs.

The bill requires travel clubs to register with the Attorney General's office.

Brett Berri works in the Attorney General's office.

"We think this bill creates entirely new procedures that are long on paper work and short on enforcement authority."

Supporters of the bill say some Missouri travel clubs promised services to members, but failed to provide the services.

A similar bill did not pass last session.
