Rahn promotes Work Zone Safety Week

JEFFERSON CITY - It wasn't just another quiet day at the office for Transportation Director Pete Rahn.

Rahn sat behind a desk, complete with potted plant and calculator, in a construction zone on northbound Route 63 Monday, fielding questions from the media as cars whizzed by.

"As you can see, this is a preposterous situation," Rahn said.

He said he was there to raise awareness about Work Zone Safety Week, which starts April 4 and to demonstrate the risks incurred by highway workers everyday.

Rahn said that drivers needed to be patient and make smart decisions as many of Missouri's roadways are revamped in the near future thanks to funds drawn from a constitutional amendment approved by voter last November.

Rahn said 28 drivers and three employees were killed in work zones last year.

"This is unacceptable, our goal is 0," he said.
