Governor Blunt Pushes for Tougher Dam Safety Regs

The governor is pushing for tougher dam regulations in Missouri.

Hillari Duthoo (Doo-thoh) has the story from the Capitol.

Governor Blunt says he expects to have new dam safety regulations on his desk this week.

After the collapse of the Taum Sauk dam in southeast Missouri in December, Blunt requested new dam guidelines from the Department of Natural Resources.

He says that he wants to ensure that lessons are learned from the Taum Sauk disaster.

"So I'm going to consider very carefully all the recommendations that the department has made to me and my request is to how we can improve dam saftey all across Missouri and what sort of oversight is appropriate for us to have for dams that are already regulated by the federal government."

No one was killed in the December 14 collapse of the Taum Sauk dam.

One official from the Department of Natural Resources said that Missouri dams are safer than most people think.
