Public schools could receive more funding

One state Representative says he has a plan to boost the bottom line at public schools.

Democrat Representative Joe Aull says even though the school foundation formula passed last year made changes in how state money was allocated, education remains underfunded.

Contents: "I want the perception out there that schools aren't getting all the money they need so that kids can be educated effectively. There are some shortcomings there, too.

Aull says the new formula has the potential to work out the bugs in state funding and will provide public schools with the money they need.

Republican State Representative Maynard Wallace says state funding to public schools isn't evenly distributed among school districts.

He says larger schools get more money while rural schools get little or no funding at all.

Wallace says Governor Matt Blunt's attempts at education funding were good. But, he says more must be done to give rural schools the same quality of education as urban schools.

Contents: "Well, I think we're moving in the right direction, I don't think we're moving fast enough. You know we say we're fully funding the formula, what we're really doing is fully funding fifteen percent."

Wallace says the state has to focus on equalizing quality of education and funding between schools.

Democrat Representative Joe Aull proposed a bill that would increase funding to public schools.

Aull says he is concerned with the status of education under Governor Blunt.

In Blunt's state of the state address, he said education was his number one priority and schools were being fully funded.

Aull says this is not the case.

He says schools are only partially funded and need more money.

Contents: "I just want us to be up front with the public and if we're going to fully fund education, let's fully fund education. If we're not going to, let's tell people we're not doing it. Let's be straightfoward with them."

Aull says he wants the governor to follow up on his claim that education is his number one priority and increase funding for public schools.
