New preschool proposal to surpass quality of other preschools

Intro: There is a proposal for a better preschool program for families below the poverty level.  Fanna Haile-Selassie has more from the Capitol.

The new proposal promotes a preschool program for low-income families.

School districts that have at least 30 percent of their students eligible for free or reduced lunches could apply for a state grant to create the preschool program.

Democratic Representative Clint Zweifel is the sponsor of the proposal, and he said this program is different than others like Head Start.

Description: For instance head start programs vary in quality from program to program, and we want to be consistent in our standards for any grant given in the program


Students who can attend for free have a family income of 200 percent or lower than the federal poverty level. 

The fee is not yet determined for students with a higher family income.
