MOVANS not statewide

Date: October 24, 2007
By: Elizabeth Ford
State Capitol Bureau

Intro: Governor Blunt announced expansion for the Missouri Automated Notification System, or MOVANS. The database allows victims of violent crimes to obtain information about the release status of their attacker.  But the original database is still not statewide.

Beth Ford has more from Jefferson City.

Hickory and Schuyler Counties had the option to utilize grant money for the system when MOVANS was originally implemented in Missouri, but opted out.

Now, five years later, even if the two counties decided to participate, there isn't enough grant money left to pay for it, says Marc Peoples, Program Manager of the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

Actuality:  PEOPLES1.WAV
Run Time: 00:09
Description: "If more money becomes available through the federal government or through grants, then it's a possibility that they could come onboard.  But at this present time, there is no funding available for those two."

The improved version of the database alerts victims when restraining orders, or orders of protection as they are known in Missouri, are served to their attackers.
