A new bill on immigration attempts to enforce federal regulations on illegal immigrants in Missouri.

The House Immigration Committee met to hear several bills when Democratic Representive Maria Chappelle-Nadal from St. Louis offered her own perspective.

Description: I'm looking at my city with the for rent signs and the for sale signs and I really would like people to live in those areas. I don't care if they're illegal or not I just want them to pay their bills. You know, and make sure the property looks great. I don't really care.


Her comment came in opposition to an immigration bill presented by Representative Vicki Schneider of O'Fallon. 

The bill aims to enforce federal regulations on illegal immigrants and employers that knowingly hire illegal aliens in the state of Missouri.

Intro:  One supporter of a House immigration bill referred to Kansas City as a "sanctuary" for illegal immigrants at a House Immigration Committee Hearing Wednesday night.

The bill would crack down on businesses hiring illegal immigrants by requiring employers to check the immigration status of each new employee.

Chris Kobach, a law professor from U-M-K-C, said that Missouri can't be a safe haven for illegal aliens anymore.

Description: You can't have a welfare state and open borders at the same time. You can't have the two things because one will always swamp the other. So you've got to control those two things and this bill is about, on a more limited scale, the welfare state of the state of Missouri.


He classified Kansas City as a "sanctuary" when he was asked which Missouri communities are safe for illegal immigrants.
