Lobbyists Not Expecting Big Changes with Upcoming Legislature

Date: December 8, 2008
By: Rebecca Layne
State Capitol Bureau

Intro: Although the Missouri governor-elect and legislative majority fall on different sides of the party lines, Missouri's lobbyists don't anticipate future problems. Rebecca Layne has more from Jefferson City.  RunTime:1:16

Some prominent Missouri lobbyists say the state's GOP legislature and Democratic governor will not have much effect on their jobs.

John Britton, lobbyist for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. and Missouri Housing Authorities, says he is hopeful this system works because he says it has before.

Actuality:  BRITTON2.WAV
Run Time: 00:18
Description: We will lobby the general assembly just like we always had and then take our chances with the governor. If he's on our side, we will certainly support legislation if we're interested in it. If he supports it, and there's some stuff in there our clients don't like, we'll oppose it.

Lobbyist Harry Gallagher  says it is too soon to tell, but he doesn't expect a major impact on his business with the upcoming change in legislature. He says, however, that state funding could be a topic of disagreement.

Actuality:  GALLA.WAV
Run Time: 00:15
Description: There are many things I think auguring the need for cooperation, and the biggest one this coming session and probably for several sessions, it looks like, is the ability to fund the operations of state government with reduced revenues.

Although there could be some disagreement, Missouri lobbyists do not expect to be affected by the GOP legislature and the Democratic governor in Missouri's next legislative session.
