Dorm Ban on Sex Offenders

Intro: Missouri's House Crime Committee was urged Tuesday afternoon to block sex offenders from college dorms. Erika Navarrete (Nahv-ah-rett) has more from Jefferson City.

The measure would require public universities to search the state's sex-offender registration list for each dorm applicant.
 
The measure is sponsored by St. Louis County Democratic Representative Sam Page.
 
Under committee questioning, Page acknowledged that the search requirements could lead to application fee cost increases.  But he argued the cost would be minimal.

Description: "The cost on an on line check is, is pretty minimal. There is one, one university that responded that indicated that they currently do this for about 225 dollars a year to check 2500 applications."

Page said this measure is modeled after a similar law in Illinois.

The committee took no immediate action on the bill.  There was no testimony in opposition.

Registered sex offenders would be blocked from public university dorms under a measure heard by the House Crime Committee.

The bill would require all students to undergo background checks when applying for student housing.

Description: "I would want our young men and women in college dorms to have some level of comfort that an elementary measure was taken to make sure that someone in the next door, in the dorm next to them, wasn't on the sex offender registry."

All state universities, colleges and community colleges would be included as part of the bill.
