New ban on cigarettes goes to governor

Intro: There is no safe cigarette, but the Missouri Senate has adopted a bill could make cigarettes safer for those who smoke in bed. RunTime:0:15

Cigarettes that do not meet certain safety requirements would be banned from the state pending the signature of the governor.

Under Mt. Vernon Republican Senator Jack Goodman's bill, cigarettes could only be sold if they stop burning when not being puffed on.

Description: "Currently across the nation between six- and seven-hundred people a year die because they've fallen asleep or left cigarettes unattended that continue to burn and their homes then burn."

Anyone who sells cigarettes not meeting these requirements would be subject to a fine.

Under a new bill making its way to the governor's desk, cigarettes sold in Missouri would have to stop burning when not being puffed on.

Mt. Vernon Republican Senator Jack Goodman said the design of these cigarettes will help to curb accidents from negligent smokers.
