Nixon makes cuts, but they may not be enough

Intro:  After Governor Jay Nixon announced 204 million dollars in budget cuts, some say they're not enough. Allison Blood has more from Jefferson City.

Wrap: Republican Budget Chairman Alan Icet said because the Governor is required to balance the budget, he will probably have to make further budget cuts.

Description: "The longer the Governor waits to take action, if we don't recover to the point where he thinks we will, then the cuts have to be deeper, because we only have so much time left in the fiscal year to balance the budget."

Icet said he would advocate for Nixon to cut his own travel budget and lead by example in tough times.

Nixon's cuts hit Medicaid the hardest, but will also eliminate 650 full and part-time jobs.

This year alone, Nixon cut 634 million dollars from the state's budget.

Crowell said these cuts undermine the work he's done to ensure the state will take responsibilty for those it insures.

Democractic Representative Chris Kelly said he finds the overall package to be satisfactory despite an 8 million dollar hit to Columbia's economy.

Kelley said he is disapointed in the 3 million dollar cut in higher education hospital and clinic opporating budgets.
