Wrap: The Missouri Tax Commission suggested increases in agricultural assessments after reviews by a University of Missouri Research Institute indicated Missouri farm productivity has grown.

Critics of tax increases on farmers claim the researchers didn't use yields when measuring this productivity and that it was a tough growing season because of the weather.

Senator Joan Bray, a Democrat from St. Louis county, was one of three senators who voted in opposition saying there is a need for change.

Description: "I just think it's bad public policy to continue to shift the burden to the residential owners and the commercial owners."

Agricultural property assessments have not been adjusted in more than 10 years.

The resolution will move to the House for discussion on Monday, after two votes in the Senate.

Wrap: The Missouri Tax Commission recommended an increase in taxes on some agricultural land across the state.

The resolution is a formal decision to make no changes to agricultural tax assessments at this time.

The measure passed with an overwhelming majority.

Bill Stouffer, a Republican from Saline County, was one of the senators backing the resolution.

Description: "The Governor in his last two state of the state addresses has promised no increase in taxes. I think it's a wrong time to be increasing taxes on anybody. We are in a time of very high volatility in agriculture and it's just not the appropriate time to do this."

Opponents say there need to be adjustments made to agricultural assessments to relieve the tax burden on residential and commercial property owners.
