Governor Jay Nixon awarded eight public safety officers with medals of valor.

Wrap: Governor Jay Nixon awarded the Medal of Valor to eight public safety officers.

St. Louis police officer Daryl Hall was killed in April by gunshots outside a downtown nightclub in St. Louis.

His uncle, Joseph Love, accepted the award on his behalf.

Department of Public Safety Director, Jerry Lee, says Hall's unselfish act is why he received the award.

Hall is the first person to receive the award posthumously.

Director Jerry Lee of the Department of Public Safety says Joseph Heath of St. John's Ambulance Service in Springfield risked his life to save two children from a house fire.

Description: "Despite the fire's intense heat and thick smoke and his lack of protective clothing and breathing apparatus, medic Heath was able to find one of the children and pass her lifeless body through the window to safety."
 
Heath, who saved both girls from the fire, choked up when he received the award.
