JEFFERSON CITY - A new law in Missouri will impose guidelines on physical education programs in public schools.
In rules proposed by the state Education Department, local education agencies will advise rules to measure student fitness.
Students would be measured on individual, team, and school wide performance.
A team of students will be considered two or more students.
Teams will have a fitness goal to meet.
If a teams score is consider in a healthy range than it has reached the standard in that area.
The scores will be given by a certified physical education teacher.
Schools with twenty-five percent of eligible students meeting three or four fitness criteria will be recognized by the Missouri Department of Eduaction.
Alternative assessments will be given by schools for students with disabilities.
The cost of these rules will not cost state agencies more than five-hundred dollars.
According to information from Department of Education Communications Coordinator Sarah Potter, the new guidelines will become effective May 30, 2014.
