Senate sends vehicle sales tax bill to governor

Date: April 3, 2013
By: Taylor Beck
State Capitol Bureau

Intro:
State senators sent a vehicle sales tax bill to the governor Wednesday... much like the one he vetoed last year.
RunTime:  0:36

Wrap: The bill imposes a sales tax on all cars registered in the state, no matter where they're purchased.

The difference between this and last year's bill is it does not require those who previously bought cars and didn't have to pay the sales tax to pay it after the fact.

Last year the Missouri Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for the Department of Revenue to collect sales taxes on cars bought outside the state.

But sponsor Republican Senator Mike Kehoe says the House's amendments to the bill language help make it constitutionally sound.

Description: "obviously anybody can sue for any reason, but we wanted to make it as bullet proof, if you would, as possible."

The Senate sent it to the governor with no opposition.

Another bill hit Governor Nixon's desk Wednesday...a car sales tax bill similar to one he vetoed last year.
RunTime:  0:33
OutCue:  SOC

Wrap: The bill requires drivers pay a sales tax when they title their vehicle, whether they purchased it in Missouri or not.

This one does not require those who previously bought cars and didn't have to pay the sales tax to pay it after the fact.

Sponsor Republican Senator Mike Kehoe says the bill is especially important for those selling cars near the state's borders.

Actuality:  KEH0E2.WAV
Run Time:  00:07
Description: "local dealers of all kinds of products especially on your side of the state, are getting killed everyday over this with the competition from Illinois."

In return, drivers wont have to pay municipal and county use taxes on their cars.

Every senator in the chamber voted yes to send the bill to the governor.
