Intro: Republican House Representatives selected Joplin's Ron Richard over St. Louis County Republican Allen Icet as Speaker-elect during Wednesday's annual veto session.
The competing representative vying for the position was House Budget committee chair Rep. Allen Icet, R-Wildwood. Despite their run-off, Richard promised that he would rename Icet as chair to the most powerful committee in the House.
House Republicans will caucus behind closed doors to select their nominee for one of the most powerful positions in Missouri's legislature -- speaker of the House.There are two candidates running for the nomination -- St. Louis County's Allen Icet and Representative Ron Richard of Joplin.
The two leadership candidates are Rep. Ron Richard, R-Joplin, who led the fight in the House to provide tax breaks for businesses and developers and Rep. Allen Icet, R-Wildwood, House Budget Committee Chair.
"The idea has been brought up. The problem is we would have to make a motion that is called 'exceeding the differences,'" House Budget Chairman Allen Icet, R-St. Louis County, said. "The House has passed 16, the Senate has now passed 16 and the funding for the Columbia and Kansas City buildings is in neither version."
Rep. Allen Icet, R-Wildwood, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, had removed that money to show disapproval for public funding of that institute.
"Well, the challenge of where we go is all about priorities, so if we think that's a higher priority than something else, then we need to adjust the state budget and put more money into that program and less money into other programs," said Budget Committee Chairman Allen Icet, R- St. Louis County.
The House Budget Committee's chairman -- Rep. Allen Icet, R-St. Louis County -- said the Budget Committee approved a budget Wednesday, and talks would begin on the House floor after spring break.
