"This is one of the last vestiges of ignorance," said Sen. Chuck Gross, R-St. Charles County, as many senators voiced relief that a compromise on the issue had finally been reached. The bill passed the Senate, 31-0, and the House, 112-14. The governor lobbied in support of the measure Thursday.
The Senate passed a bill Thursday that allows the Water Patrol to make arrests when crimes are committed in their presence. That means they can make arrests on and off the water. St. Charles Senator Chuck Gross says this could lead to a unified statewide force.
"What qualifies as a life science project?" said Sen. Chuck Gross, R-St Charles. "How do we judge the limit of how much we can spend, when we don't even know how many life science projects we actually have?"
These two men work together well because they realize the importance of the appropriations process -- the only constitutional obligation the legislature has, said Sen. Chuck Gross, R-St. Charles County.
"The final issue is this is $200 million that, in a very short amount of time, we're going to say, 'OK, let's go and do this thing," said Sen. Chuck Gross, R-St. Charles County. "It's irresponsible. There are other ways to compromise."
