Sen. Bill Clay, D-St. Louis, introduced a bill that will prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation. There ten other states that have such laws. Sen. Dave Klarich is concerned that it might recongize same sex marriages as a result of it.

"Historically this state has recognized some marital unions and not recognized others," says Sen. Dave Klarich, R-St. Louis County, who has introduced legislation this session that would reestablish Missouri law against gay marriage.
Though homosexual individuals and advocacy groups regard this ban as discriminatory, the legislation's sponsor, Sen. Dave Klarich, R-St. Louis County, said the issue is largely that of economics, not tolerance.
"Missouri is silent on this issue," said Sen. Dave Klarich, R-St. Louis County. The state's current marriage laws refer to "husband" and "wife," but do not explicitly prohibit same-sex marriages.
