"And so it's a way of taking the pressure off of the leadership in all of these areas from dealing with a very hot potato."

"I have gone through it time after time, and it's impossible," said Sen. Doyle Childers, R-Reed Springs. "I doubt if there are a dozen people who really could sit down and have an intelligent conversation about it."
The sponsor of the half-cent increase, Sen. Doyle Childers, R-Reeds Spring, said that because of the magnitude of the budget crisis, the voters should have the opportunity to choose an increased sales tax instead of dramatic reductions in vital services such as education and health care.
