It is now up to Gov. Mel Carnahan and the Missouri General Assembly to decide what, if any, action will be taken on the report's findings. At least one joint interim committee, which is chaired by Rep. Jim Kreider, D-Nixa, and Sen. Harry Wiggins, D-Kansas City, has been discussing the forfeiture matter for the last several months. Although the committee met Tuesday in St. Louis to begin discussing the report's findings, it was not immediately known what they plan on doing about the issue.
The 6-member committee will be headed by Senator Harry Wiggins of Kansas City. He says that the mission is to look at all areas of Missouri tax law. The committee will report their findings and recommendations in mid-November.
"This clarifies once and for all that you cannot use any state funds for abortion," said Sen. Harry Wiggins, D-Kansas City, who co-authored that part of the bill with Missouri Catholic Conference lobbyist Louis DeFeo.
Some lawmakers denied the burden will be that onerous. "No, this is just patient's rights, it's people who are sick and can't help themselves," said Sen. Harry Wiggins, D-Kansas City.
Sen. Harry Wiggins presented a bill to the Senate today that advocates his view on abortion. If his bill passes, Missouri drivers could order specialty license plates that say "Respect Life" on them. However, lobbyists for women's rights oppose his bill. If it passes, they say they want to establish a commission to support women's reproductive rights.
The measure, introduced by Sen. Harry Wiggins, D-Kansas City, would allow Missourians to replace the "Show-Me State" logo with a "Respect Life" message.
