When then-Sen. Joe Maxwell, a Democrat, was elected lieutenant governor, he stepped down from the Senate. John Cauthorn, a Republican, was elected to replace him with 54 percent of the vote. Now challenging Cauthorn is Rep. Sam Berkowitz, D-Memphis.
Sens. Mike Gibbons of St. Louis County and Chuck Gross of St. Charles said they are interested in the position. Other returning Republican senators John Cauthorn of Mexico and John Loudon of St. Louis County say they haven't yet decided whether to run.
Sen. John Cauthorn, R-Mexico, said the conceal and carry bill he's sponsoring may reach the Senate floor next week. Though Cauthorn said he hasn't counted votes, Greg Jeffery, legislative chairman of the Second Amendment Coalition of Missouri, said he believes there are enough votes to pass conceal and carry in both chambers.
"We know that the criminals will possess a weapon and we'd like to protect the citizens of the state of Missouri," Sen. John Cauthorn, R-Mexico, one of the bill's sponsors, told a Senate Judiciary Committee in a hearing Tuesday.
