Democrat Mary Bland says it's obvious to her why she and other black senators were excluded from the budget committee charged with crafting a compromise between the House and Senate.
JEFFERSON CITY - A conference committee held wednesday to discuss the state budget consisted only of senators who are white and male. Sen. Mary Bland, D-Jackson County, and others said this was done intentionally.
Sen. Mary Bland, D-Jackson County, said she had been intentionally excluded after she had written two letters expressing her desire and qualifications for serving on the committee.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mary Bland, D-Jackson County, would create the Commission on Obesity Prevention and Management within Missouri's Health Department. The Commission would study the problem and treatment options, maintain a database of obesity-related resources and advise schools on what they can do to become more nutrition-friendly. The Commission would report its findings to the legislature and the Governor.
