The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Jackson Count, said that he thinks that Missouri Supreme Court has neglected to set execution dates for these inmates because some of the supreme court justices currently serving are in opposition to the death penalty.
Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Jackson County, called Maxwell's actions "a dramatic and unprecedented expansion of power of the role of the chair in the Missouri Senate."
Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Jackson County, questioned whether all of the projects included fall under the category of life sciences. But his bigger question was why the state was putting its limited resources toward higher education bonds instead of fixing its roads.
Steelman says she is worried that the other three campuses will suffer when competing for funding, but Kansas City area Sen. Matt Bartle says combining the positions is a smart move.
"My sense of this is if the chancellors of the University of Missouri system that are charged with governing that system think that is a good idea, we ought to do it," said Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Lee's Summit,
"We shouldn't have a situation where we have to explain to our children what 'XXX' means or 'adult toys' mean," Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Jackson County, the bill's sponsor, said. "It is disgusting."
The bill's sponsor, Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Jackson County, said law enforcement would be much more likely to find a match in the FBI's Combined DNA Index System database in the future if DNA from all previous convicted felons and sex offenders was on file.
The commission, named by the governor, enjoys constitutional independence from both the governor and the legislature. That level of independence is the target of a constitutional amendment filed by Sen. Matt Bartle, R-Jackson County. The bill would abolish the committee and transfer its powers to a director who would serve at the pleasure of the governor.
