The Senate sponsor of the measure, Sen. Norma Champion, R-Springfield, said she expected the signing would occur in conjunction with celebrations for SMSU's 100th anniversary on March 17.

Dispite Senator Graham's attempt to filibuster, the Senate bill changing the name of Southwest Missouri State University to Missouri State University passed by a 2/3 majority. The bill's sponsor, Republican Norma Champion of Springfield, thanked University of Missouri officials for helping to end the dispute.
"We firmly believe that we are a state university in every sense of the word," said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Norma Champion (R-Springfield). She said the new name would help Southwest attract out of state students.
"We have a reputation nationwide for our meth levels," said Sen. Norma Champion, R-Mexico. "This new system would allow state law enforcement to access these records at any time."
